Former Australian pilot says toxic engine fumes made him sick

(TheAustralian) – A FORMER pilot for Australia’s largest airline claims he was paralysed in mid-flight because of “aerotoxic syndrome” – exposure to toxic engine fumes on airliners, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

Campaigners say that poisonous chemicals leaking into the aircraft cabin cause symptoms ranging from dizziness, hallucinations, memory loss and fatigue to seizures and even paralysis.

Passengers are also thought to be affected, but campaigners say the symptoms are often confused with jetlag, so few complain.

A blood test is being developed in America to detect evidence of low-level exposure – a key step in proving that aerotoxic syndrome is a genuine illness. Full article here

Nobel laureate scientist defines future vaccines as “food”

(Xinhuanet) – Barry J. Marshall, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2005 and clinical professor with the University of Western Australia, said people might, in the future, be vaccinated by swallowing capsules instead of by using needles.

He made his remarks at the World Expo’s third theme forum, which opened on Sunday in Wuxi, east China’s Jiangsu Province.

“The project I’ve been working on is to develop vaccines that look like a food product. I think that’s the future beyond the needles, to have vaccines look more like food,” he said. Continue reading

MSM: First, China. Next: the Great Firewall of… Australia?

(TimeMagazine) – The concept of government-backed web censorship is usually associated with nations where human rights and freedom of speech are routinely curtailed. But if Canberra’s plans for a mandatory Internet filter go ahead, Australia may soon become the first Western democracy to join the ranks of Iran, China and a handful of other nations where access to the Internet is restricted by the state.

Plans for a mandatory Internet filter have been a long-term subject of controversy since they were first announced by Stephen Conroy, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, in May 2008 as part of an $106 million “cybersafety plan.” The plan’s stated purpose is to protect children when they go online by preventing them from stumbling on illegal material like child pornography. To do this, Conroy’s Ministry has recommended blacking out about 10,000 websites deemed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to be so offensive that they are categorized as ‘RC,’ or Refused Classification. Govt wants ISPs to record browsing history

(ZDNet) – Companies who provide customers with a connection to the internet may soon have to retain subscriber’s private web browsing history for law enforcement to examine when requested, a move which has been widely criticised by industry insiders.

The Attorney-General’s Department yesterday confirmed to ZDNet Australia that it had been in discussions with industry on implementing a data retention regime in Australia. Such a regime would require companies providing internet access to log and retain customer’s private web browsing history for a certain period of time for law enforcement to access when needed. UN warns climate change could trigger ‘mega-disasters’

(AFP) – Weather-related catastrophes brought about by climate change are increasing, the top UN humanitarian official said Sunday as he warned of the possibility of “mega-disasters”.

John Holmes, the UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, said one of the biggest challenges facing the aid community was the problems stemming from changing weather patterns.

“When it comes meteorological disasters, weather-related disasters, then there is a trend upwards connected with climate change,” Holmes, who is in Australia for high-level talks on humanitarian aid, told AFP.

“The trend is there is terms of floods, and cyclones, and droughts.”

Holmes, who is the UN’s emergency relief coordinator, said it had been a tough year due to January’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, which killed more than 250,000 people. Full article here

Warmongers of the world, unite – John Pilger

(Uruknet) – Is there any difference between Australia’s leaders and the three front-runners in Britain’s election when it comes to attitudes to war?

Staring at the vast military history section of the airport shop, I had a choice: the derring-do of psychopaths or scholarly tomes with their illicit devotion to the cult of organised killing. There was nothing I recognised from reporting war. Nothing on the spectacle of children’s limbs hanging in trees and nothing on the burden of shit in your trousers. War is a good read. War is fun. More war, please. Continue reading

Welcome To The World’s First Murdochracy – John Pilger

Adelaide is Australia’s festival city. Its arts festival is currently in swing. Polite debate, aesthetics and high-octane wine are putting the world to rights. With one exception. Adelaide is where Rupert Murdoch began his empire. The voracious trail starts here. No statue stands; his is a spectral presence, controlling the only daily newspaper, even the printing presses. Across Australia, he owns almost 70 per cent of the capital city press and the only national newspaper, and Sky Television, and much else. Welcome to the world’s first murdochracy. Continue reading

Medical Martial Law Possible with New Public Health Bill in South Australia

South Australia has proposed controversial new legislation, in an unprecedented move to legalize forced medicine, civil libertarians say. Under the guise of public health, the South Australian Health Minister John Hill has introduced the South Australian Public Health Bill 2009 into state Parliament. It is feared the Bill will authorize a massively expanded new public health department — in addition to the already existing one — which will wield authoritarian powers that threaten to radically change current medical practice and leave wide spread human and civil rights violations in its wake.
