(Guardian) – The Times has lost almost 90% of its online readership compared to February since making registration mandatory in June, calculations by the Guardian show.
(Guardian) – If you are reading this article on a printed copy of the Guardian, what you have in your hand will, just 15 years from now, look as archaic as a Western Union telegram does today. In less than 50 years, according to Clay Shirky, it won’t exist at all. The reason, he says, is very simple, and very obvious: if you are 25 or younger, you’re probably already reading this on your computer screen. “And to put it in one bleak sentence, no medium has ever survived the indifference of 25-year-olds.”
You have probably never even heard of Shirky, and until this interview I hadn’t either. When I ask him to define what he does, he laughs, and admits that often when he’s leaving a party someone will say to him, “What exactly is it you do?” His standard reply – “I work on the theory and practice of social media”– is not just wilfully opaque, but crushingly dreary, which is funny, because he is one of the most illuminating people I’ve ever met. (LondonTelegraph) – Climate change now represents so urgent a threat to mankind that the only way to deal with it is by suspending democracy. (Hat tip: DR at Bishop Hill)
When James Lovelock makes this kind of terrifying argument in books or newspaper interviews at least one can reasonably dismiss it as the potty burblings of an otherwise amiable and harmless old man.
When the BBC does it, however, I’d suggest the time has come to start tooling up and heading for the hills. Have a listen to this recent radio broadcast by the BBC’s “Ethical Man” Justin Rowlatt and tell me whether you find it as scary as I do.
It purports to be a balanced examination of Lovelock’s controversial remarks in a Guardian interview:
I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while.
But it’s clear right from the beginning what the documentary’s line is: What do we want? Ecofascism. When do we want it? Now! Full article here

(GermanForeignPolicy) – A New Era of Imperialism
BERLIN The leading German foreign policy magazine is predicting “a new era of imperialism”. The “struggle for energy, raw materials and water” is going to dominate global policy in the 21 century, declared a former prominent foreign policy maker of the ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in the magazine “Internationale Politik”. “19th Century nationalism, colonialism and imperialism are returning”, he writes in his article. Twenty years after the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe, the author is proclaiming the end of a “transition period” in world history and the beginning of a new epoch that will not exclude future “energy wars”. (KurtNimmo) – Video: Afghans – U.S. Created and Funds Taliban
“It’s near-impossible to find anyone in Afghanistan who doesn’t believe the US are funding the Taliban: and it’s the highly educated Afghan professionals, those employed by ISAF, USAID, international media organizations – and even advising US diplomats – who seem the most convinced,” reports the Guardian today. “The US has an interest in prolonging the conflict so as to stay in Afghanistan for the long term,” said one Afghan.
It does not take a lot of research to prove the Taliban — and al-Qaeda — were fabricated by the CIA in league with Pakistani and Saudi Arabian intelligence. Continue reading

(HuffingtonsPost) – One could be forgiven for thinking that the neoconservatives who nudge us towards war with Iran are under the effect of the magic mushroom. Writing for The Australian, one of Rupert Murdoch’s papers, Hitchens’ Mullahs indubitably fancy a mushroom betrays a sly mind that lacks lucidity. Continue reading

I was sent the now notorious “police spotter card” through the post. It’s an official laminated card for “police eyes only” and labelled as coming from “CO11 Public Order Intelligence Unit”. You can imagine my reaction at finding I was the subject of a secret police surveillance process … Continue reading

A controversial new history of the Indian Mutiny, which broke out 150 years ago and is acknowledged to have been the greatest challenge to any European power in the 19th century, claims that the British pursued a murderous decade-long campaign to wipe out millions of people who dared rise up against them. In War of Civilisations: India AD 1857, Amaresh Misra, a writer and historian based in Mumbai, argues that there was an “untold holocaust” which caused the deaths of almost 10 million people over 10 years beginning in 1857.
