An Attempt to Uncover the Truth About September 11th, 2001 – Source: 911Research.com

We all know the official story of September 11th: four jetliners were hijacked by groups of four and five Arabic men armed with box cutters, who proceeded to fly three of the four jets into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Subsequently the World Trade Center Towers, weakened by the impacts and fires, collapsed into piles of rubble. The FBI had compiled a list of hijackers within three days, and it was so obvious that Osama bin Laden had masterminded the operation from caves in Afghanistan, that there was no need to seriously investigate the crime or produce evidence. The “retaliatory” attack on the Taliban would soon commence.

Is this story true? Its central assumptions have never been tested by an official government body whose members lack obvious conflicts of interest. There are numerous red flags in the official story, which requires a long series of highly improbable coincidences. Questioning that story is an act of responsible citizenship.

The September 11th Targets, and Their Defense

The targets of the September 11th attacks aside from the four jetliners, were some of the most famous and unique buildings in the world:

These were only the focal points of the attack. The real target of the attack appears to have been something much broader and far-reaching than mere buildings, and even the thousands of innocent victims in the buildings and airplanes. Whatever the motives of the perpetrators of the attack, lower Manhattan, a section of the Pentagon, and four jetliners were the immediate physical targets.

The World Trade Center was a collection of seven buildings in lower Manhattan, including the famous Twin Towers, which were once the world’s tallest buildings. By the end of September 11th, 2001, all seven buildings were either leveled or severely damaged and gutted, including Building 7, which was on a separate block.

The Pentagon is the administrative heart of the U.S. military establishment and the largest office building in the world. On September 11th, one of 10 sections was damaged in the attack.

The cities and military installations in the United States are normally defended from airborne attack of any type by NORAD, which monitors all air traffic in North America in real time, and rapidly dispatches interceptors whenever there is a flight emergency. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon would normally be two of the best defended buildings in the world.

Until September 11th, 2001, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center towered over lower Manhattan, the tallest buildings in the city, and the second tallest in the United States. The Twin Towers were the first to be built and the most famous of a set of six buildings comprising the World Trade Center complex. Building 7, also known as WTC 7, was the only building with a World Trade Center address that was on a different block. It was built more than a decade after the towers. Like the Twin Towers, Building 7 was leveled on September 11th.

The World Trade Center as Anticipated Target

In 2002, National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice denied that the attack on the World Trade Center was anticipated.

I don’t think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile. All of this reporting about hijacking was about traditional hijacking. You take a plane — people were worried they might blow one up, but they were mostly worried that they might try to take a plane and use it for release of the blind Sheikh or some of their own people. 1

However, numerous reports show that officials did, in fact, consider the scenario of planes being used as guided missiles against signature targets such as the World Trade Center. In 2004, USA Today reported that NORAD ran drills in the two years preceding the attack in which simulated hijacked jetliners were crashed into targets including the World Trade Center. 2 Other reports date back long before the attack. The April 3, 1995 edition of Time Magazine ran a cover story in which Senator Sam Nunn described a scenario in which terrorists crashed a radio-controlled airplane into the U.S. Capitol building. 3

The World Trade Center was well-recognized as a target of a terrorist attack ever since the 1993 garage bombing attack. In 1994, an expert from a panel commissioned by the Pentagon wrote in the Futurist magazine:

Targets such as the World Trade Center not only provide the requisite casualties but, because of their symbolic nature, provide more bang for the buck. In order to maximize their odds for success, terrorists will likely consider multiple, simultaneous operations. 4

Another fact belying Dr. Rice’s statement is that on the morning of 9/11/01 the National Reconnaissance Office was running an exercise simulating the crash of a corporate jet into a tower on their campus.

Awareness of the likelihood of the targeting of the Twin Towers was not confined to officialdom. Several events in the popular culture seemed to anticipate the attack.

Events Preceding the Attack

Events that occurred within a year of the attack and should have been the subject of an investigation remain widely unknown to the public. Control of the complex was privatized through a 99-year lease to a consortium headed by Silverstein Properties. Facts relating to the security of the buildings are also suspicious.

Facts about the Famous World Trade Center

The World Trade Center consisted of a cluster of 6 buildings that occupied a single superblock, plus Building 7, which occupied an adjacent block.

The Towers’ History

Origins of the World Trade Center and the World’s Tallest Buildings

The origins of the World Trade Center extend back to 1946, when the New York Legislature created the World Trade Corporation with a view to creating a trade center in Manhattan. The history is recounted in greater detail at Great Buildings Online.

The Port Authority chose as the site for the WTC in 1962 the block bounded by West, Church, Liberty, and Vesey Streets, and selected architect Minoru Yamasaki to design the project. At Yamasaki’s request, Worthington, Skilling, Helle and Jackson was selected as the engineering firm, and Yamasaki worked closely with its engineers John Skilling and Leslie Robertson. The architectural firm Emery Roth & Sons handled production work. 1

The site MASTER PLAN from 1963, though detailed, was modified in some respects prior to implementation. In particular, the final configuration of the low-rise buildings WTC 4, 5, and 6 was different than shown in the MASTER PLAN.

The towers were dedicated on April 4th, 1973. The owners initially had difficulty finding tenants to fill the enormous towers, which had over 8 million square feet of floor space. Most of the North Tower was still unoccupied when a serious fire broke out in February of 1975.

The 110-story Twin Towers, rising 1,368 and 1,362 feet, remained the world’s tallest and largest buildings until they were surpassed by the Sears Tower in 1974.

WTC 7 and WTC 5, the World Trade Center was controlled by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) until being leased to private interests six weeks before the 9/11/01 attack. WTC 3, originally the Vista Hotel, was purchased by the PANYNJ in 1980 for $78 million. Then, in 1996 the PANYNJ sold the Vista to Marriott for $141 million. 3

The Towers’ Architecture

The Innovative Design of the World Trade Center Towers

The Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world when they were completed in 1972. The design, created by architect Minoru Yamaski, was innovative in several ways, including its elevator system, and its structural system. These innovations would be widely adopted in later skyscrapers.

Elevator System

A conventional elevator system would have taken up half the space of the lower floors. A novel system employing express and local elevators was developed by Otis Elevators. The express elevators took people to “sky lobbies” on the 44th and 78th floors, where they could board local elevators. (See this schematic.) This system halved the number of elevator shafts that would have been required in a conventional system, and resulted in shorter average transit times for tenants.

A March 2001 article in Elevator World describes contemporary work on the elevator system of the Twin Towers by Ace Elevator as “one of the largest, most sophisticated elevator modernization programs in the industry’s history.” 1

perimeter walls, and a dense bundle of columns forms its core. Tall buildings have to resist primarily two kinds of forces: lateral loading (horizontal force) due mainly to the wind, and gravity loading (downward force) due to the building’s weight. The tube within a tube design uses a specially reinforced perimeter wall to resist all lateral loading and some of the gravity loading, and a heavily reinforced central core to resist the bulk of the gravity loading. The floors and hat truss completed the structure, spanning the ring of space between the perimeter wall and the core, and transmitting lateral forces between those structures.

The tube within a tube architecture was relatively new at the time the Twin Towers were built, but has since been widely employed in the design of new skyscrapers. In fact most of the world’s tallest buildings use it, including:

  • The Sears Tower (1450 ft)
  • The World Trade Center Towers (1350 ft)
  • The Standard Oil of Indiana Building (1125 ft)
  • The John Hancock Center (1105 ft)

Foundation

An 800- x 400-foot foundation box, 65 feet deep and with 3-foot-thick retaining walls — the so-called bathtub — was under more than half the World Trade Center complex, including the Twin Towers and the adjacent hotel. 2 3

The Core Structures

The Structural System of the Twin Towers

Each tower was supported by a structural core extending from its bedrock foundation to its roof. The cores were rectangular pillars with numerous large columns and girders, measuring 87 feet by 133 feet. The core structures housed the elevators, stairs, and other services. The cores had their own flooring systems, which were structurally independent of the floor diaphragms that spanned the space between the cores and the perimeter walls. The core structures, like the perimeter wall structures, were 100 percent steel-framed.

The exact dimensions, arrangement, and number of the core columns remained somewhat mysterious until the publication of a leaked collection of detailed architectural drawings of the North Tower in 2007. Although the drawings show the dimensions and arrangement of core columns, they do not show other engineering details such as the core floor framing. It is clear from photographs, such as the one on the right, that the core columns were abundantly cross-braced.

9/11 Commission Report — denies their very existence, claiming the towers’ cores were “hollow steel shaft[s]:”

The top illustration indicates what may have been typical dimensions and thickness of the smaller core columns, about half-way up the tower. The outermost rows of core columns were apparently considerably larger, measuring 54 inches wide.

Some of the core columns apparently had outside dimensions of 36 inches by 16 inches. Others had larger dimensions, measuring 52 inches by 22 inches. 3 The core columns were oriented so that their longer dimensions were perpendicular to the core structures’ longer, 133-foot-wide sides. Construction photographs found at the Skyscraper Museum in New York City indicate that the outermost rows of core columns on the cores’ longer sides were of the larger dimensions. Both the FEMA’s World Trade Center Building Performance Study and the NIST’s Draft Report on the Twin Towers fail to disclose the dimensions of the core columns, and the NIST Report implies that only the four core columns on each core’s corners had larger dimensions.

Like the perimeter columns — and like steel columns in all tall buildings — the thickness of the steel in the core columns tapered from bottom to top. Near the bottoms of the towers the steel was four inches thick, whereas near the tops it may have been as little as 1/4th inch thick. The top figure in the illustration to the right is a cross-section of one of the smaller core columns from about half-way up a tower, where the steel was about two inches thick. The bottom figure shows the base of one of the larger core columns, where the steel was five inches thick. The bases of the columns also had slabs of steel running through their centers, making them almost solid.

Construction photographs show that the core columns were connected to each other at each floor by large square girders and I-beams about two feet deep. The debris photograph below shows what appears to be one of the smaller core columns surrounded by perpendicular I-beams approximately three feet deep. In addition, the tops of core structures were further connected by the sloping beams of the hat truss structures.

The Perimeter Walls

The Structural System of the Twin Towers

The towers’ perimeter walls comprised dense grids of vertical steel columns and horizontal spandrel plates. These, along with the core structures, supported the towers. In addition to supporting gravity loads, the perimeter walls stiffened the Towers against lateral loads, particularly those due to winds. The fact that these structures were on the exterior of the Towers made them particularly efficient at carrying lateral loads. Richard Roth, speaking on behlf of the architectural firm that designed the Towers, described each of the perimeter walls as essentially “a steel beam 209′ deep.” 1 Regardless, it is clear that the core structures were designed to support several times the weight of each tower by themselves.

As the diagram and photograph illustrate, the perimeter wall structures were assembled from pre-fabricated units consisting of 3 column sections and 3 spandrel plate sections welded together. Adjacent units were bolted together: column sections were bolted to adjacent columns above and below, and spandrel plate sections were mated with adjacent sections on either side with numerous bolts.

There were 59 perimeter columns on each face of the towers, and one column on each corner bevel, making a total of 240 perimeter columns in each tower.

Like the core columns, the thickness of the perimeter columns tapered from the bottom to the top of the towers. The illustrated cross-sections represent columns near the top, and near the mid-section of the towers.

The Floors

The Structural System of the Twin Towers

The floors of the Twin Towers completed the structural system whose main elements were the core structures and the perimeter walls. The floor diaphragms were annular structures that spanned the distance between the core structures and the perimeter walls, providing large expanses of uninterrupted floor space. The cores had their own flooring systems, which were structurally independent of the surrounding floor diaphragms.

The floor diaphragms consisted of lightweight concrete slabs poured onto corrugated steel pans, which were supported by trusses. Primary double trusses were interwoven with transverse secondary trusses — a fact ignored by the truss failure theory. The primary trusses were 900 mm deep, and spaced on 2.04 m centers.

The 10 cm thick concrete slabs were apparently a lightweight form of concrete typically used in high-rises. Its density and exact composition remain unknown, but such lightweight concrete is typically 60% as dense as concrete used in roads and sidewalks. The floors were the only major part of these mostly steel buildings that contained concrete.

Some Floors Had More Than Trusses

FEMA’s report imples that the floor diaphragms were supported only by the webbed trusses described here. It gives no indication of other structures that may have helped transfer the substantial lateral forces due to wind loading between the perimeter walls and core structures, and it provides no detail on the flooring system in the towers’ cores, which were apparently supported by heavy steel I-beams. This idea that all the floors were undergirded only by trusses is a prerequisite to the truss-failure theory, which blames a chain-reaction of failures of the trusses for the building collapses. There is evidence, however, that certain floors had solid steel-frame support structures rather than light open trusses, such as the following passage from the Engineering News-Record:

On the 41st and 42nd floors, both towers will house mechanical equipment. To accommodate the heavy loads, the floors are designed as structural steel frame slabs. All other floors from the ninth to the top (except for 75 and 76, which will also carry mechanical equipment) have typical truss floor joists and steel decking. 1

Truss-to-Column Connections

Most variants of the truss-failure theory blame the detachment of the truss ends from the perimeter walls for the pancaking of floors, and eventual total collapse of the buildings. It has been asserted that only one or two bolts connected the truss ends to the perimeter walls. Howerver, according to both of the official government reports, the truss ends rested on steel plates that were both welded and bolted to the top chords of the trusses and attached via bolted damping units to their lower bottom chords.

The Hat Trusses

The fourth primary structural subsystem in each tower was the hat truss — a lattice of large diagonal I-beams that connected the perimeter walls to the core structure beteen the 107th floor and roof. This structure was also known as the “outrigger truss system.”

The hat truss structure strengthened the core structure, unified the core and perimeter structures, and helped to support the large antenna mounted atop the North Tower. The hat truss, which contained both horizontal and sloping I-beams, connected core columns to each other, and connected the core to the perimeter walls. Most the beams connected core columns to each other, while a set of sixteen horizontal and sloping beams spanned the distance the core and perimeter walls. Eight of these, the outrigger trusses, connected the corners of the core to the perimeter walls, while another eight connected the centers of the core’s periphery to the perimeter walls.

The hat trusses are central to the “probable collapse sequence” described by NIST’s Final Report on the Twin Towers. It blames the hat truss for transferring “column instability” between the core structures and the perimeter walls. In other words, it asserts that reinforcing structures caused the Towers to self-destruct. Its section entitled “Results of Global Analysis” describes the “structural deterioration” of the North Tower as follows:

6.14.2 Results of Global Analysis of WTC 1

After the aircraft impact, gravity loads that were previously carried by severed columns were redistributed to other columns. The north wall lost about 7 percent of its loads after impact. Most of the load was transferred by the hat truss, and the rest was redistributed to the adjacent exterior walls by spandrels. Due to the impact damage and the tilting of the building to the north after impact, the south wall also lost gravity load, and about 7 percent was transferred by the hat truss. As a result, the east and west walls and the core gained the redistributed loads through the hat truss.

Structural steel expands when heated. In the early stages of the fire, structural temperatures in the core rose, and the resulting thermal expansion of the core was greater than the thermal expansion of the (cooler) exterior walls. About 20 min. after the aircraft impact, the difference in the thermal expansion between the core and exterior walls, which was resisted by the hat truss, caused the core column loads to increase. As the fires continued to heat the core areas without insulation, the columns were thermally weakened and shortened and began to transfer their loads to the exterior walls through the hat truss until the south wall started to bow inward. At about 100 min, approximately 20 percent of the core loads were transferred by the hat truss to the exterior walls due to thermal weakening of the core; the north and south walls each gained about 10 percent more loads, and the east and west walls each gained about 25 percent higher loads. Since the hat truss outriggers to the east and west walls were stiffer than the outriggers to the north and south walls, they transferred more loads to the east and west exterior walls.

The inward bowing of the south wall caused failure of exterior column splices and spandrels, and these columns became unstable. The instability spread horizontally across the entire south face. The south wall, now unable to bear its gravity loads, redistributed these loads to the thermally weakened core through the hat truss and to the east and west walls through the spandrels. The building section above the impact zone began tilting to the south as the columns on the east and west walls rapidly became unable to carry the increased loads. This further increased the gravity loads on the core columns. Once the upper building section began to move downwards, the weakened structure in the impact and fire zone was not able to absorb the tremendous energy of the falling building section and global collapse ensued.

The Bathtub

The Deep Basement Containing the Twin Towers’ Foundations

About half of the superblock that the World Trade Center occupied contained a deep basement, the so-called bathtub. It was a skewed rectangle with sides about 980 and 520 feet, and a depth of about seven stories. 1

The bathtub is the 9-block area of the World Trade Center site that is excavated down to bedrock and hard soils and ringed by the slurry wall. The bathtub was created to enable the building of the Twin Towers’ foundations, and was ultimately filled with seven stories of basements housing the parking garage, mall, and building services. Since the ground water level at the World Trade Center site was just a few feet below the surface, while bedrock was about 70 feet below the surface, creating the bathtub required first building a 7-story dam below the water level of the adjacent Hudson River — the slurry wall. Ground excavated to make the bathtub was deposited west of West Street to make the land on which the World Financial Center and Battery Park now stand: 1,000,000 cubic yars moved in 100,000 truck loads filled a 700- by 1400-foot area, creating $90,000,000 worth of land. 2

Construction

Essentially, the bathtub was built underground and underwater. Construction crews would dig a section of trench three feet wide and down to bedrock level. As the trench was dug, it was filled with a bentonite slurry, which prevented the inflow of river water by filling the trench and sealing the adjacent soil. Once the section of trench was completely excavated, a pre-fabricated steel framework, weighing 22 tons, was lowered into it. Then concrete was poured through a pipe into the bottom of the trench while the lighter bentonite slurry was sucked from the top. The entire wall was built using 152 22-foot-long sections.

Each steel framework contained a set of guides for tiebacks — cables that would pass through the walls and secure them to the ground outside the bathtub. The tiebacks were installed as the material inside of the bathtub was excavated, preventing the pressure of the soil and groundwater outside the bathtub from pushing the walls inward. The sub basement structures, once constructed, provided additional bracing of the walls.

Controlling Interests

Ownership, Control, and Insurance of The World Trade Center

The World Trade Center complex came under the control of a private owner for the first time only in mid-2001, having been built and managed by the Port Authority as a public resource. The complex was leased to a partnership of Silverstein Properties and Westfield America. 1 2 The new controllers acquired a handsome insurance policy for the complex including a clause that would prove extremely valuable: in the event of a terrorist attack, the partnership could collect the insured value of the property, and be released from their obligations under the 99-year lease. 3

In December 2003, the Port Authority agreed to return all of the $125 million in equity that the consortium headed by Silverstein originally invested to buy the lease on the World Trade Center. The Port Authority rejected a request by the Wall Street Journal to review the transaction. 5 A press report from November 2003 about the same transaction noted that it would allow Silverstein to retain development rights. 6

The lease deal didn’t close until July 24th, just 6 weeks before the attack. 7

The insurance money flows involved in the destruction of the original six World Trade Center buildings were far greater. Silverstein Properties, the majority owner of WTC 7, also had the majority interest in the original World Trade Center complex. Silverstein hired Willis Group Holdings Ltd. to obtain enough coverage for the complex. Willis undertook “frenetic” negotiations to acquire insurance from 25 carriers. The agreements were only temporary contracts when control of the WTC changed hands on July 24. 9

After the attack, Silverstein Properties commenced litigation against its insurers, claiming it was entitled to twice the insurance policies’ value because, according to a spokesman for Mr. Silverstein, “the two hijacked airliners that struck the 110-story twin towers Sept. 11 were separate ‘occurrences’ for insurance purposes, entitling him to collect twice on $3.6 billion of policies.” This was reported in the Bloomberg News less than one month after the attack. 10

The ensuing legal battle between the leaseholders and insurers of the World Trade Center was not about how the 9/11/01 attack on the WTC could be considered two attacks, when the WTC was only destroyed once. Rather it seemed to revolve around whether the beneficiaries thought it was one or two “occurrences.” The proceedings before U.S. District Judge John S. Martin involved a number of battles over the insurers’ discovery rights regarding conversations about this issue between insurance beneficiaries and their lawyers. 11 12

In December 2004, a jury ruled in favor of the insurance holders’ double claim. 13

The 1975 Fire

The North Tower Survived A Serious Fire in 1975

Seldom mentioned in the literature about the September 11th attack is the fact that the North Tower experienced a serious fire in 1975, when it was only sparsely occupied. On February 13, 1975, a fire, set by a custodian turned arsonist, started on the 11th floor and spread to limited portions of six other floors, burning for three hours. Several fire suppression systems that were later installed in the towers were not present at the time, including sprinklers, elevator shaft dampers, and electrical system fireproofing. 1

The fire, which broke out just before midnight, did not kill anyone but forced the evacuation of fifty people, consisting mostly of maintenance staff. The captain of Engine Co. 6 described the suppression effort as “like fighting a blow torch.” One hundred thirty-two firefighters fought the fire, which burned primarily on the 11th floor. Sixteen men were treated for smoke inhalation. The New York Times reported that “flames could be seen pouring out of the 11th-floor windows” on the tower’s east side, but described damage to the tower’s core as “apparently confined to electrical wiring.” 2 The fire spread to portions of the core beyond the 11th floor via telephone cables in a cable shaft.

On the day after the blaze, Fire Commissioner John T. O’Hagan called for the installation of sprinkler systems in the towers. 3 Eventually sprinkler systems were installed throughout the Twin Towers.

Although the data on this fire is limited — there apparently being no publicly available photographs of it — it was clearly less severe than the 2001 North Tower fire, though of longer duration. However, it may have been more severe than the South Tower fire.

The Towering Inferno

It is possible that the arsonist, a nineteen-year-old from the Bronx named Oswald Adorno, got the idea of setting the fire from The Towering Inferno, a movie released late in 1974. In the movie, a fire starts in a utility closet of the 138-story skyscraper due to faulty wiring installed by a corrupt developer. The architect, who learns of the faulty wiring specifications upon returning from a long vacation proclaims, “If you had to cut costs, why didn’t you cut floors instead of corners?”

In a parallel to the movie, Adorno lit the fire inside a closet containing telephone switching equipment. 4

The 1993 Bombing

The First Attack on the World Trade Center

On Friday, February 26, 1993, at 12:18 PM, a large explosion ripped through the public parking garage of the World Trade Center. The explosion resulted in six persons being killed, and more than 1,000 being injured; and resulted in nearly $300 million in property damage. 1

The explosion was caused by a 1500-pound urea-nitrate bomb, packed in a yellow Ford Econoline rental van, and detonated with a timer after the van had been parked in the basement parking garage. The explosion created a crater 200 feet by 100 feet wide and several stories deep. Evacuation of the twin towers began after the blast. Most of the injuries were due to smoke inhalation.

After the bombing, large improvements in the evacuation procedures for the Twin Towers were implemented.

Damage and Repair

Despite the size of the explosion, it only damaged one support column for the Twin Towers. Cleanup and repair began immediately. Workers removed more than 6,000 tons of debris. The cleanup and repair operation cost about $500 million.

Post-Bombing Safety Upgrades

Evacuation Planning Saved Thousands in the 9-11 Attack

The evacuation following the 1993 garage bomb attack took over six hours, partly because the stairwells were pitch black due to a power failure.

In the wake of the attack the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began a multi-million-dollar revamping of security in and around the Twin Towers and Buildings 4 and 5. The architect of the security upgrades, which totaled $58 million, was Douglas Karpiloff, the longtime security director of the World Trade Center. 1

Numerous improvements to evacuation facilities and procedures were made in the Twin Towers. These included: the installation of battery-operated light fixtures in the stairwells; the application of bright glow-in-the-dark paint to the handrails and a centerline down the stairs; and the installation of a public address system. 2 Perhaps even more important was the change in attitude of the buildings’ occupants, who reportedly took the fire drills much more seriously after the bombing.

One of several companies that won contracts for the upgrade was Securacom. The same company, with ties to George W. Bush and Marvin Bush, later won an $8.3 million contract for World Trade Center security. 3

Building 7

The Secrecy-Shrouded Building Holding Giuliani’s Command Center

Building 7 was the dark flat-topped 47-story skyscraper immediately north of the World Trade Center super-block, across Vesey Street. Its designation as 7 World Trade Center is somewhat misleading: whereas WTC 1 through 6 surrounded the WTC plaza and were completed in the 1970s, Building 7 was 300 feet from the plaza and its construction did not begun until 1985. 1 It was of an entirely different architectural style than the other six buildings. It was completely destroyed late in the afternoon on September 11th.

Building 7 was privately owned from the beginning, in contrast to the other six buildings, which were publicly owned until the summer of 2001. Building 7 was formerly the headquarters of the junk-bond firm Drexel Burnham Lambert, which contributed to the savings and loans collapse and $500 billion bailout of the latter 1980s.

Emergency Command Center

The 23rd floor of Building 7 had received 15 million dollars’ worth of renovations to create an emergency command center for then-Mayor Rudolf Giuliani. The features of the command center include:

  • Bullet- and bomb-resistant windows
  • An independent, secure air and water supply
  • The ability to withstand winds of 200 mph

These renovations were applied only to the 23rd floor. 2 3 The command-center bunker was the the subject of much ridicule when it was created. 4

Structural System

Building 7 was a 100% steel frame building. Like most modern skyscrapers, it had a series of columns ringing its perimeter, and a bundle of columns in its core structure. Its perimeter columns numbered 58 and its core columns numbered 25, according to the rather vague description provided in FEMA’s WTC Building Performance Study. The following figure from the report shows the shape of the building and some details about the structural system. The top four illustrations show the perimeter structure, the middle one shows the footprint, and the bottom three show seven floors of part of the core structure. However, it does not combine views of the core perimeter structure (above) and the core structure (lower portion of below).

What Entities Occupied the World Trade Center Buildings

A list of tenants occupying six of the seven World Trade Center buildings was compiled by the CoStar Group, Inc. 1 and was published on CNN.com. 2 3 4 5 6 7 3 World Trade Center was a Marriott Hotel. These lists are not entirely consistent with other published lists, such as one by The Wall Street Journal, which lists CitiGroup among the tenants of WTC 7. 8

WTC Security

Companies that Provided Security at the World Trade Center

A company named Stratesec had an ongoing contractor to handle security at the World Trade Center “up to the day the buildings fell down” according to CEO Barry McDaniel. The company, formerly named Securacom, acquired an $8.3 million World Trade Center contract in October 1996, according to SEC filings. The company also provided security for Dulles International Airport and United Airlines between 1995 and 2001. Two of the commandeered flights on September 11th were United Airlines’, and one took off from Dulles. 1

Marvin P. Bush, brother of George W. Bush, was a principal in the company between 1993 and 2000. A private Kuwaiti-American investment firm with ties to the Bush family was one of the company’s backers.

In the company’s own words, Stratesec has “an open-ended contract with the General Services Administration (GSA) and a Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) with the agency that allows the government to purchase materials and services from the Company without having to go through a full competition.” It promotes its services to clients such as the armed services and Department of Justice for projects that “often require state-of-the-art security solutions for classified or high-risk government sites.”

The role of Stratesec in providing security to the targets of the September 11th attacks has apparently not been investigated. Asked if FBI or other agents had questioned anyone at Stratesec about the company’s security work in connection with the 9/11 attack, CEO Barry McDaniel said no.

The Pentagon

Background for September 11th

The Pentagon is the home of the Department of Defense, with which it is synonymous. It is the most identifiable symbol of U.S. military might.

The Pentagon is the largest office building in the world, with a total floor area of 6,500,000 square feet. Of that 3,800,000 square feet are covered by offices, storage and concessions. That makes the Pentagon about 2,000 times the size of a typical house. The facade of the building is 77 feet high. Each of the five outside walls is 921 feet long. It has a total of 17.5 miles of corridors. The building occupies 29 acres of its 583 acre site, and its a central courtyard covers 5 acres. The 67 acre parking lot has 8,770 spaces for vehicles. There are 7,754 windows, 131 stairways, 19 escalators, 13 elevators, and 284 restrooms. 1

The Pentagon not only has five sides; it has five floors, and five concentric rings. Ten corridors run perpendicular to the rings and connect them.

Sixty years to the day before the September 11th attack, in 1941, ground was broken for the huge building. 2

Pentagon History

Details About the World’s Largest Office Building

The following is excerpted from the Pentagon Renovation Program Website. 1

The Pentagon’s unusual five-sided shape was dictated by the site originally proposed (adjacent to Memorial Drive, about three-fourths of a mile north of where the building was actually constructed). An early plan called for a square structure with one corner cut off to accommodate an existing road. This resulted in a skewed Pentagon shape. Serious objections were raised to locating the building on open land directly between Arlington Cemetery and Washingtons Monumental Core, and discussions ensued regarding selection of a building site resulting in less visual and physical impact from the project. During the debate on the site, the project’s chief architects, George Edwin Bergstrom and David J. Witmer, continued to refine the design. The final design retained the five sides, in the form of a true pentagon, which gave rise to the building’s name. That shape resulted in the most efficient use of available space. The concept of using several concentric rings to contain the space evolved during further refinement of design. Preliminary design and drafting took just 34 days. A project of this magnitude and urgency demanded the rapid assembly of an unprecedented design and production effort.

The office of the chief architect rapidly grew to 327 architects and engineers who were supported by 117 field inspectors. The weekly output of prints ranged from 12,000 to 30,000 with reproduction machines running on a 24-hour basis. For periods of time, new drawings were issued nightly. The reproduction effort consumed 15,000 yards of print paper per week.

Construction began on September 11, 1941, and was completed on January 15, 1943. At one stage of construction, 15,000 people were employed on the job working three shifts, 24 hours a day. At night, they worked under floodlights. Construction took just 16 months, a remarkable feat of engineering and management.

The Pentagon building is composed of five concentric pentagonal rings connected by ten radial corridors. Each of its outer walls is 921.6 feet long. The building covers 29 acres, the largest ground area of any office building in the world. A five-acre pentagonal courtyard is located in the building’s center. The building and its central courtyard cover 34 acres. There are 17.5 miles of corridors in the building. The structure is three times the size of the Empire State Building and 50 percent larger than Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. The building rests on 41,492 concrete piles, the combined length of which would stretch 200 miles. The five concentric pentagonal rings are separated by interior courts which serve as light wells. This design feature increases the number of windows allowing natural light. Each ring has five stories. The Mall and River sides of the building have a basement area which includes a partial mezzanine. The innermost and outermost rings have sloping slate roofs, while the other three rings have flat, built-up roofs. The rings are connected at each floor level by a series of ten radial corridors extending from the A ring (innermost) to the E ring (outermost).

Pentagon Architecture

Architecture and Engineering of the Pentagon

The Pentagon, considered the largest office building in the world, has many distinctive design features, while being rather ordinary in its construction. The vast building, nearly a mile in circumference, has a footprint in the shape of an equilateral pentagon. In keeping with the theme of five, it has five concentric wings, each of which is five stories high.

The five wings, named Rings A, B, C, D, and E, with E being the outermost, are less distinct than appears from the building’s roof. Only the lightwells between Rings B and C go to the ground. The lightwells between Rings A and B, C and D, and D and E descend only to the base of the third floor.

Pentagon Renovation

Renovation Program Had Hardened the Facade Attacked on 9/11/01

The renovation program included the following improvements to the building:

  • Exterior walls reinforced with steel
  • Exterior walls backed with Kevlar
  • Blast-resistant windows installed
  • Fire sprinklers installed
  • Automatic fire doors installed
  • Building operations and control center created

The extensive use of reinforced concrete and non-reinforced masonry was one concession. Certainly the threat of any kind of terrorist attack on the building was far from the thoughts of the original designers. As a result, the Pentagon was constructed with a thin limestone facade over a brick infill between reinforced concrete floors, structurally supported by a reinforced concrete beam and column frame. Enough to protect from the elements but not from the potential forces of significant blast events. 2

Steel Reinforcements

The steel reinforcements to the walls consisted of tubular frames surrounding the window openings and attaching to the reinforced concrete floor slabs. Each windowed wall panel (between vertical concrete columns) was retrofitted with a piece consisting of two horizontal tubes welded to two vertical tubes running from the floor to the ceiling. 3

The reinforcements were to be sequentially applied to the five wedges of the Pentagon over time. Wedge One — one of five sections of the Pentagon — was the first to be retrofitted, and the upgrades to the exterior wall were complete by 9/11/01. Wedge Two was apparently yet to be retrofitted. The plane crashed into the building’s exterior entirely within Wedge One.

Kevlar cloth was stretched between the steel columns to provide blast resistance to the short spans of brick wall. 4

Windows

The original windows were replaced with blast-resistant windows nearly two inches thick.

NORAD

The Air Defense Network

NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, is the defense shield that normally protects the United States against all forms of airborne attack, including by hijacked aircraft. Any time an aircraft deviates from its course, air traffic controllers request a military intercept according to military response code 7610-4J. Intercept times are especially short in the east-coast corridor where there are numerous bases with combat-ready aircraft on continuous alert.

On September 11th, 2001, the standard operating procedures were apparently suspended.

NORAD’s mission is supported by the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center which collects data from a worldwide system of satellites, radars, and other sensors and processes that information in real-time. This nerve center continuously monitors events in the airspace of the United Space and of the world. An unofficial website contains the following rundown on some of its capabilities.

Cheyenne Mountain operations are conducted by six centers manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The centers are: Command Center, Air Defense Operations Center, Missile Warning Center, Space Control Center, Combined Intelligence Watch Center, and the Systems Center.

Command Center:

The Command Center is the heart of operations in Cheyenne Mountain. In this center, the Command Director and his crew serve as the NORAD and U.S. Space Command Commander in Chief’s direct representative for monitoring, processing, and interpreting missile, space or air events which could have operational impacts on our forces or capabilities, or could be potential threats to North America or U.S. and allied forces overseas. The Command Center is linked directly to the National Command Authorities of both the U.S. and Canada as well as to regional command centers overseas. When required, the Command Director must consult directly with the NORAD and U.S. Space Command Commander in Chief for time-critical assessments of missile, air, and space events; he takes action to ensure the Commander in Chief’s response and direction are properly conveyed and executed.

Air Defense Operations Center:

The Air Defense Operations Center provides command and control for the air surveillance and air defense network for North America. In 1994, they monitored over 700 “unknown” radar tracks entering North American airspace. Many of these were subsequently identified as friendly aircraft that had erred from flight plans or used improper procedures. Yet nearly 100 were identified as illegal drug-carrying aircraft that were subsequently prosecuted by the U.S. and Canadian Drug Enforcement Agencies.

Combined Intelligence Watch Center:

The Combined Intelligence Watch serves as the nation’s indications and warning center for worldwide threats from space, missile, and strategic air activity, as well as geopolitical unrest that could affect North America and U.S. forces/interests abroad. The Watch gathers intelligence information to assist all the Cheyenne Mountain work centers in correlating and analyzing events to support NORAD and U.S. Space Command decision makers.

Systems Center:

The Systems Center ensures continuity of operations throughout the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center by providing communications and computer systems management for over 100 computer systems and 600 communications circuits in support of NORAD and U.S. Space Command missile warning, space control, and air defense missions. This center is also responsible for monitoring all environmental systems maintained within Cheyenne Mountain, to include electrical power generation, water purity, integration of communications and computer systems testing, operator and maintenance technician training, and maintenance of all Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center communications and computer systems. 1

1. Phase One- Approach Phase.

During peacetime, intercepted aircraft will be approached from the stern. Generally two interceptor aircraft will be employed to accomplish the identification. The flight leader and wingman will coordinate their individual positions in conjunction with the ground controlling agency. Their relationship will resemble a line abreast formation. At night or in IMC [Instrument Meteorological Conditions, i.e., they can’t see the other plane], a comfortable radar trail tactic will be used. Safe vertical separation between interceptor aircraft and unknown aircraft will be maintained at all times.

2. Phase Two- Identification Phase.

The intercepted aircraft should expect to visually acquire the lead interceptor and possibly the wingman during this phase in visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The wingman will assume a surveillance position while the flight leader approaches the unknown aircraft. . . . The flight leader will then initiate a gentle closure toward the intercepted aircraft, stopping at a distance no closer than absolutely necessary to obtain the information needed. . . . 1

The two United States Air Force (USAF) F-15 fighters ordered from Otis
to intercept United Airlines Flight 175 were flying at only 23.9% of
their top speed from the 8:52 take-off to 9:03 when United Airlines
Flight 175 impacts the South Tower of the WTC.
At 9:02:54 United Airlines Flight 175 impacts the South Tower of the
WTC
between the 78th and 84th floors. NORAD says the F-15’s from Otis are
still 71 miles away. This means their average flight speed was only
23.9% of their top speed in trying to intercept United Airlines Flight
175. Otis is 153 miles from WTC – F-15’s have a top speed of 1875 MPH.
Minus 71 miles from 153 miles = 82 miles covered in the 11 minutes from
8:52 to 9:03. Sixty minutes divided by 11 minutes = 5.45 x 82 miles =
447.3 MPH divided by 1875 MPH = 23.9% of their top speed.

To cover the distance from when these fighters took off from Otis at
8:52 till the time they reached the WTC at 9:11 they were flying at
only
25.8% of their top speed.

The two F-15’s covered the 153 miles in 19 minutes from the 8:52
take-off to the time they reached the WTC at 9:11. Sixty minutes
divided
by 19 minutes = 3.16 x 153 miles = 483.2 MPH divided by 1875 MPH =
25.8%
of their top speed.

The two or three USAF F-16 fighters ordered from Langley to intercept
American Airlines Flight 77 were flying at only 14.3% of their top
speed
from 9:30 take-off to 9:37 when American Airlines Flight 77 impacts the
Pentagon.

At 9:37 American Airlines Fight 77 impacts the western side of the
Pentagon. NORAD says the F-16’s from Langley are still 105 miles away.
This means their average flight speed was only 14.3% of their top speed
in trying to intercept American Airlines Flight 77. Langley is 130
miles
from the Pentagon – F-16’s have a top speed of 1500 MPH. Minus 105 from
130 = 25 miles covered in the 7 minutes from 9:30 to 9:37. Sixty
minutes divide by 7 minutes = 8.57 x 25 miles = 214.3 MPH divided by
15000 MPH = 14.3% of their top speed.

To cover the distance from when these fighters took off from Langley at
9:30 till the time they reach the Pentagon at 9:49 they were flying at
only 27.4% of their top speed.

It takes the F-16’s from Langley 19 minutes to reach Washington. This
means their average flight speed was only 27.4% of their top speed in
trying to protect our nations capital. Langley is 130 miles from the
Pentagon – F-16’s have a top speed of 1500 MPH – Sixty minutes divided
by 19 minutes = 3.16 x 130 miles = 410.5 MPH divided by 1500 MPH =
27.4%
of their top speed.

    I thought that I have been awake to what is going on for many years. But I can see now that my knowledge hasn’t even scratched the surface. That is what bothers me the most. The progress towards this evil NWO appears now nearly complete (if not already complete). I am now way beyond being afraid. I now feel paralyzed with hopelessness. These feelings must end here and now. I will not permit my short life to be ruled by terror and fear.

    The problem with this site, as well as with programs like Alex Jones, Jeff Rense, etc. that there is little focus on a rational solution to overcome the evils shown. Readers walk away with the impression that all individual efforts to confront these evils are futile. Is that not exactly what the world slave traders desire for the masses? A people crippled in hopelessness and fear? Or a fanatical response to the evils of world slavery?

    I personally believe that we as people are much more than flesh and bone and that our spirits and souls are eternal (believe me, I am far from being a religious person.)

For those of you who dont feel remorse for this ~ take a tip ~ in the end you will lose. Why? More and more of us will clear our heads of pharmaceutical toxins and play the same spook game you play. You will eventually be outnumbered 10 million to one. Are you THAT naive to imagine that at this moment there are`nt FBI or CIA freedom fighters who have joined your organizations for the sole purpose of gathering incriminating evidence to be used in court against the lawbreakers at the top so as to awaken the people?
    Look at it this way, why not get on the winning side by covertly working against your crime bosses and let them PAY YOU for doing it? Of course they will set traps for you to test you out, but then you`re risking this for your kids are`nt you? After you`re dead and gone, will your kids ignore your foto in the attic box or bring it down and proudly hang it on the livingroom wall? Of course you could continue to hoodwink your kids and yourself, and if you`re a good enough actor, or if you`ve buried your psychotic ply layers so deep in your head that no mortal could ever find them, including yourself, you could even go in the grave a smiling loser and STILL have your kids proudly hang your picture on th wall.
    At some point though, it may hit you, maybe on your death bed, that you`ve spent your life as a “PPP”, or pusillanimous poltroonish prisoner, needlessly decomposing in an imagined state of smiling bliss inside the prison you had constructed yourself. Finally it may sink in that you`ve squandered your life feeding fat superfluous appendages anchored to your back, and spinning in circles chasing your golden tail with beads and baubles attached. Then you will f-r-o-w-n….big time. But dont fret, the same doctor who has shortened your life by dozens of years will inject some wonderful calming serum into your veins and then carefully study your face waiting for that smile to return again so he can move on to the next terminally ill patient.
    But rejoice, you`ll be pleased to know there is one scenario worse than this; if you`re a childless PPP on your last day. As an impressionable pimply teenager in school you had mistakenly said to yourself “I love kids too much to bring even one into this tortured world”, never for one second realizing that you were saying what the slavemasters had subliminally programmed you to think; that self-punishment and suicide was hep ensuring that the seed of the people who cared a bit about their fellow man became lost in th sands of time, and that their own churchillian wimpified seed would rapidly multiply unhindered bringing more and more noisy chaos and war on Earth, until only ONE plump alligator was left in the pond. It would then die of starvation. Then to make matters worse, the last people you will ever see may not even pat your arm, or allow you to pet your beloved pet cat one last time as you prayed they would. But even THEN you forgive them and say “they`re just following institution rules” , as your senses dissipate into nothingness.
