Florida GOP candidate urges internment camps for undocumented immigrants

(RawStory) – A Republican state house candidate from northern Florida is standing by her proposal to build internment camps for undocumented immigrants that would “collect enough illegal aliens until you have enough to ship them back.”

Marg Baker, who’s one of three GOP candidates running for the nomination for Florida’s 48th district, made the announcement earlier this month at a meeting of the 9-12 Project, Glenn Beck’s political activist group.

“We can follow what happened back in the ’40s or ’50s [when] I was just a little girl in Miami and they built camps for the people that snuck into the country,” Baker said.

“Because they were illegal, they put them in the camps and they shipped them back,” Baker said, to applause.

Her pronouncement “stunned” the district’s Republican incumbent, Peter Nehr. Full article here

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has described Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip as a violation of the Geneva Conventions and called on the Israeli government to lift it.

In a statement released on Monday, the organisation called the blockade “collective punishment”, a crime under international law. It described Gaza as a territory plagued by frequent power cuts, a ruined economy, and a collapsed health care system.

“The closure imposed on the Gaza Strip is about to enter its fourth year, choking off any real possibility of economic development,” the ICRC said.

“Gazans continue to suffer from unemployment, poverty and warfare, while the quality of Gaza’s health care system has reached an all-time low.”

Furkan Dogan, a US citizen who lived in Turkey, was killed on May 31 during an Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla that carried humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

The attack on the six-ship convoy killed at least 20 peace activists, including nine Turkish citizens on board the M.V. Mavi Marmara, and injured over 40 others.

No evidence was provided, and one day later the press released was modified. The original headline was changed from “Attackers of the IDF Soldiers Found to be Al Qaeda Mercenaries” to “Attackers of the IDF Soldiers Found Without Identification Papers.” Commenting on the retraction, Blumenthal writes, “The more Israel’s claims about the flotilla’s terrorist links are challenged, the more they fall apart.”
