His torture-induced “confessions” will be admissible. All this is in violation of commitments under the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict not to treat children in war as though they were adults.

It can assassinate even American citizens abroad without a scent of due process.

Nonetheless, it was a question that Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan was unwilling to answer. The question was posed to Ms. Kagan by Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, during her Senate hearings. In trying to avoid answering the question, Ms. Kagan responded by saying, “Sounds like a dumb law,” but she did admit that just because a law might be dumb does not make it unconstitutional. So, can Congress tell us what we should eat? Well, back in 1942, the Supreme Court decided that, indeed, Congress basically can do just that. In the infamous case of Wickard v. Filburn, the U.S. government ordered the owner of a small farm in Ohio, Roscoe Filburn, to cease and desist growing wheat to feed his chickens. Filburn had no intention of selling the wheat, but, nonetheless, he was ordered to destroy it and pay a fine for having the temerity to think he could grow wheat for is own consumption without permission from the U.S. Congress. It’s all very well, but there are certain circumstances – a war is a typical example – where you can’t do that. You’ve got to have a few people with authority who you trust who are running it. And they should be very accountable too, of course.

But it can’t happen in a modern democracy. This is one of the problems. What’s the alternative to democracy? There isn’t one. But even the best democracies agree that when a major war approaches, democracy must be put on hold for the time being. I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while.

I’m sure he said it in a gentle, quavery, tentative voice, but even so, don’t phrases like that tend to make the blood run cold – especially when spoken by the man viewed by many of the world’s eco-loons as the ultimate environmental guru?

Health Care Tyranny

Health care spending accounts for approximately 17% of GDP in the USA. Until last week about 50 cents of every health care dollar was being spent by the government with the remaining 50 cents so being spent in the private sector. Until last week about 11% of the healthcare industry was controlled by government monopoly in the form of Medicare, Medicaid, Indian Health Care, Veterans Health Care, and other entities (all failing with trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities). The 6% remaining in the private sector is subject to heavy government intervention (i.e. largely a political capitalism, not free market capitalism). With the passage of Obamacare the remaining 6% of the health care industry will soon fall under the complete control of the federal government. Experience and the laws of economics tell us that a government monopoly on health care means costs will spiral out of control, taxes will skyrocket, innovation will be curtailed, the brightest minds will flee the health care industry, shortages, waiting lines, and unnecessary mortality will result. Welcome to the tyranny of socialized medicine.

Legislating Away Your Freedoms – One ‘Homegrown Terrorist’ At A Time

(SOTT) – Two weeks ago Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman introduced a stunning piece of draconian diatribe euphemistically called the bipartisan Senate Bill 3081, or the ‘Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010’1. The bill is ‘bipartisan’ in the sense that it is the product of at least two different types of psychopathic personality disorder.

Constitutional expert, lawyer and author Glen Greenwald described the bill as:

“probably the single most extremist, tyrannical and dangerous bill introduced in the Senate in the last several decades, far beyond the horrific, habeas-abolishing Military Commissions Act. It literally empowers the President to imprison anyone he wants in his sole discretion by simply decreeing them a Terrorist suspect – including American citizens arrested on U.S. soil. The bill requires that all such individuals be placed in military custody, and explicitly says that they ‘may be detained without criminal charges and without trial for the duration of hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners,’ which everyone expects to last decades, at least.”2

Universal Healthcare and the Threat to American Liberty

Much has been said over the past several months leading up to the passage of this new Universal Health Care bill entitled “Affordable Health Care for America Act” (H.R. 3962, H.R. 4872, the Reconciliation Act of 2010).  Some of it true, but most of it grossly misleading.  I feel it my duty as a conscientious American to chime in on the matter.  This piece of legislation and the attending controversy and media frenzy represents the latest installment in a series of tyrannical government devices  masquerading as a benevolent government effort to address the artificially inflated need for “universal health care.”  Its the same old technique, remixed and served for public consumption.

It is the Hegelian dialectic put in action by the contrived Problem, Reaction, Solution paradigm.  For centuries it has been the method by which Governments the world over have been able to institute laws and policies their people would never have allowed otherwise.  The formula is simple: First you create – or artificially magnify – a Problem.  Then you carefully manage and provide disproportionate media coverage of the people’s Reaction to the problem.  Finally, you address this altogether artificial Problem by providing the prepared Solution which is a welcome relief given the frenzied, emotionally charged Reaction that the Problem first incited.

However, in order to see through this sort of mass manipulation, we need not only to understand the history of its use in general, but also to understand our own history as a nation, from where our individual rights derive, the role of government and the source and limits of its power. According to USA Today, the number of Americans taking antidepressants in 2005 was 27 million people, or 10% of the entire population of our country – and this was five years ago, before the government looted our economy.
